25 Things to Do When You’re Bored at Home

We all have those days when we are at home with plenty of time to spare but absolutely no idea what to do with it. You might have finished your chores, watched everything you wanted to watch and spent far too long scrolling through your phone. Suddenly, the afternoon seems to stretch on forever.

The good news is that there are plenty of things to do when bored at home, whether you want to be productive, try a new hobby or simply find something enjoyable to fill an hour or two.

You do not need to spend lots of money or make elaborate plans. Sometimes, the best way to beat boredom is to change your surroundings, try something different or give yourself permission to do something purely for fun.

Here are 25 ideas to try the next time you find yourself wondering what to do.

Creative things to do when bored at home

1. Start a new book

If you have a book sitting on your bedside table that you keep meaning to read, now is a good time to open it. Choose something that genuinely interests you, whether that is a gripping thriller, a romantic novel or a fascinating non-fiction book.

Make a drink, find somewhere comfortable and give yourself half an hour away from your usual distractions.

2. Try journalling

Journalling is an easy activity that requires little more than a notebook and a pen. Write about your day, make a list of things you are looking forward to or record a few thoughts that have been on your mind.

If you do not know where to begin, try writing down ten things that make you happy or describing your ideal weekend.

3. Get creative with drawing or painting

You do not have to be particularly artistic to enjoy drawing or painting. Find a beginner tutorial online, try a simple watercolour picture or sketch an object in your home.

The point is to experiment and enjoy yourself, rather than produce something worthy of a gallery.

4. Make a scrapbook

Gather old photographs, postcards, tickets and other keepsakes to create a scrapbook. You could make one about a holiday, a favourite year or special moments with family and friends.

It is a satisfying way to revisit memories while making something personal.

5. Learn a new craft

Knitting, crochet, embroidery and other crafts can be enjoyable ways to spend a quiet afternoon. Look for a beginner project that uses inexpensive materials and follow a simple tutorial.

You might discover a hobby that becomes a regular part of your week.

6. Have a proper cosy night in

Instead of spending another evening moving between your phone and the television, make a little occasion of staying in. Put on comfortable clothes, prepare your favourite snacks, choose a film and settle somewhere comfortable.

You could even make a list of films you have always wanted to watch and work through it over the coming weeks.

7. Bake something delicious

Baking gives you something to do with your hands and a treat to enjoy afterwards. Try biscuits, brownies, scones or a simple loaf cake using ingredients you already have.

If you prefer savoury food, make homemade bread or experiment with a new recipe for dinner.

8. Create a relaxing playlist

Spend some time putting together a playlist for different moods. You might create one for rainy afternoons, another for cleaning the house and one for winding down before bed.

Revisiting old favourites can be just as enjoyable as discovering new music.

9. Have an at-home spa evening

Turn an ordinary evening into a chance to relax. Run a warm bath if you enjoy one, use your favourite moisturiser, put on comfortable clothes and take some time away from screens.

You do not need expensive products. The aim is simply to create a little space for yourself.

10. Make your favourite hot drink

Try making hot chocolate from scratch, experimenting with a new tea or learning how to prepare your favourite coffee at home.

Pair your drink with a book or some music and enjoy a slower afternoon.

Productive things to do when bored at home

11. Declutter one small area

If you feel like doing something useful, choose one drawer, cupboard or shelf to organise and declutter. You do not need to tackle the entire house.

Sort through what you own, put things back where they belong and set aside anything you no longer need. Completing one small task can leave you feeling more organised without turning your day into a major cleaning session.

12. Refresh a corner of your home

You can change how a room feels without buying anything new. Rearrange a few cushions, move a lamp, display a favourite photograph or bring a houseplant into a different space.

Sometimes a small change is enough to make a familiar room feel more inviting.

13. Organise your photographs

Digital photographs can quickly become difficult to navigate. Spend some time deleting duplicates, creating albums or collecting your favourite memories into one folder.

You could also select a few photographs to print and display at home.

14. Plan the week ahead

Use a quiet afternoon to look at the week ahead. Write down appointments, plan a few meals and make a list of tasks that need attention.

Keep your plans realistic and leave room for rest. The aim is to make the coming week feel more manageable, not to fill every available hour.

15. Update your reading or hobby lists

Make a list of books you want to read, films you want to watch, places you want to visit or hobbies you would like to try.

You can use a notebook or a simple digital list. It gives you something to return to whenever boredom strikes again.

Things to do when you want to learn something

16. Learn a new language

Spend twenty minutes learning basic vocabulary in a language that interests you. Try a beginner lesson, listen to a short audio exercise or practise a few everyday phrases.

You do not need to make rapid progress. A small introduction might be enough to discover whether you want to continue.

17. Explore a historical topic

Choose a historical person, event or period and spend some time learning about it. Read an article, borrow an ebook or watch a documentary from a reliable source.

You could keep a notebook of interesting facts and use each discovery as a starting point for further reading.

18. Listen to a podcast

Find a podcast about a subject you enjoy, such as books, history, culture, food or everyday life. You might discover a new favourite series or learn about something you have never considered before.

If you prefer doing something at the same time, listen while completing a puzzle or simple craft project.

19. Learn a new recipe

Pick a dish you usually buy ready-made and learn how to prepare it yourself. Homemade soup, pasta sauce, bread or a favourite takeaway-inspired meal can be good places to start.

You may discover a new staple for your weekly meal plan.

20. Try a new digital skill

Explore basic photo editing, graphic design, creative writing or spreadsheet skills using beginner-friendly online resources.

Choose something that interests you rather than learning a skill simply because you feel you should be productive.

Things to do when bored without spending money

21. Have a home cinema afternoon

Choose a theme, make popcorn if you have it and watch a film you love or one you have never seen. You could pick a decade, a director or a series of films based on books.

Make it feel different from an ordinary evening in front of the television.

22. Play a game

Try a jigsaw puzzle, a crossword, a word game or a board game you already own. If you live with other people, invite them to join you.

A little friendly competition can make a quiet afternoon more entertaining.

23. Create a personal bucket list

Write down experiences you would like to have over the next year. Include small ideas, such as visiting a new café or trying a new recipe, alongside bigger ambitions.

Keep the list somewhere accessible and add to it whenever inspiration strikes.

24. Give yourself a phone-free hour

If you have spent much of the day scrolling, put your phone in another room for an hour. Choose a book, a puzzle, some music or a simple household project instead.

You might find that having fewer distractions makes it easier to enjoy what you are doing.

25. Do absolutely nothing for a little while

Not every spare moment needs to be filled with an activity. Sit somewhere comfortable, watch the rain, listen to music or simply enjoy a quiet cup of tea.

Rest can be worthwhile even when it does not produce anything.

How to decide what to do when boredom strikes

When you have too many choices, it can be surprisingly difficult to choose one. Instead of scrolling endlessly for inspiration, ask yourself what you need most at that moment.

If you are tired, choose something gentle, such as reading or listening to music. If you have restless energy, try baking, organising a small space or learning a new skill. If you want company, call a friend or invite someone to play a game.

You could even create your own boredom jar by writing activities on small pieces of paper and choosing one at random whenever you cannot decide what to do.

The next time you find yourself looking for things to do when bored at home, remember that you do not need to make every day exciting or productive. A little creativity, a change of routine or a genuinely relaxing afternoon can be more than enough to make your time at home feel enjoyable.
